Hi, I’m Jacob.

I’m a teen and adult therapist. I can help you lessen your struggles with anxiety, depression, grief, anger, ADHD, procrastination, life changes, and relationship conflicts.

I get it. It can be super uncomfortable to think about meeting with a stranger and talking to them about the things that stress you out, cause you anger and pain, and the things you can’t quite figure out how to solve or change on your own.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT

Let me take a minute and explain what a first session with me may look like. In the beginning of our meeting I will ask you a few questions about what’s important to you, including your relationships, interests, hobbies, things you do for fun, etc. I will also ask what happened recently that helped you decide now to reach out for support through counseling.

That will be a stepping off point where we will begin to talk about the stressors you have, the things that cause you frustration or emotional pain and what you hope to change and want to be different. While we are talking about these things, you will get to decide how much you talk or don’t talk, how much you open up or how guarded your remain, and you can to decide when, how, and what you choose to share and be open about.

I want to make sure that you have the time and space to take small steps toward building trust. A new relationship takes time and I will be showing you that I can be a trustworthy person. Then you can decide if you are willing to take some risks, trust more, and open up more deeply. We will follow your lead and comfort level.

Together we can begin to identify what is going well in your life and what you would like to see improve. We all have strengths, areas for growth, and issues and things that concern us that we want to have change in our lives. By working together we can identify yours and then develop a plan to help you begin to address and make the changes you are ready and wanting to focus on.

Some of these will be more short term goals which will take a shorter time to work on. Whereas, others maybe more long term and take some time to work through. Even if you’re a little unsure exactly what and how you want and need things to be different; its ok, we will work to help identify, process, and tackle these issues, so you can find the answers and solutions that are right for you.

I provide a judgement-free space that welcomes people to be open about things that they may not feel comfortable sharing with friends or family. Therapy is a time to be able to focus on you…how you feel, what you think, what you want, what you believe, and what you hope to create in your life.

You will find that: relatable, calm, unshockable, empathic, and knowledgable, are some of the strongest traits I have as a therapist.

COUNSELING AND THERAPY FOR ADULTS

Many adults I work with say to themselves, “I shouldn’t feel this way” or “I should be able to figure this out like everyone else.” In reality, a lot of people are struggling with things in their life and try to

power through them without telling others about their struggles and pain. Often, people then start to feel a level of shame and self-judgement which then hurts their confidence and self-esteem.

If the domino effect continues, then often people will start to feel depressed and anxious. If this resonates with you, I can help. I am passionate about helping adults detach from their shame and stop that cycle of self-criticism and negative beliefs. By just taking the first step of saying, “I need help,” you are finally giving yourself the opportunity to receive the support you deserve.

I work with adults and emerging adults who want and need some support and assistance with how to:

  • Decrease stress and anxiety
  • Diminish depressive episodes
  • Reduce frustration and reactive anger while learning how to express and use anger in positive ways
  • Become less scattered and unorganized due to distraction challenges and ADHD while learning more executive functioning skills to help with motivation, organization, and decision making
  • Learn and implement the skills needed for goal setting, time management skills, and reduction of procrastination to help reach more self-fulfillment
  • Change unwanted and unhelpful thinking patterns, including self-criticism
  • Improve self-confidence and self-esteem
  • Learning more helpful strategies of how to talk to, interact with, and parent challenging teenagers
  • Cope and navigate life transitions (moving, break-ups, career and relationship changes)
  • Figure out the whole “adulting” process and grow in self-confidence and readiness
  • Eliminate people-pleasing in relationships
  • Work through relationship conflicts and miscommunications
  • Process grief and mourning the loss of someone you love from death, divorce, separation, or ending relationships.

Life is full of challenges for us to overcome, and sometimes we just need the right tools to

conquer those obstacles. If you need some more skills and solutions, I would be happy to help you work through the current situations that are causing you discomfort and emotional suffering.

COUNSELING ADOLESCENTS and HOW I CAN HELP PARENTS

You know it and I know it — being a teen the last few years has been ROUGH! The world has been nothing like we expected or anticipated it would be. You have missed out on a ton of experiences that should have been rightfully yours. If you think life has sucked and you’re sick of everything that’s gone on around you, I completely understand.

Change is a constant when you’re a teen. Pressures and expectations are usually dynamics that teens wish they could live without. There doesn’t seem to be enough time in the day to balance school, times with friends, me time, family responsibilities, and eating! Keeping up with all the demands that everyone else places on you is difficult. If you’re feeling down on yourself for not doing all that is expected of you, it’s understandable since often there aren’t enough hours in the day to get it all done. When all this pressure builds, it can lead teens like you to feel insecure, overwhelmed, anxious, frustrated, and angry.

Some teens I’ve worked in therapy, shut down when life gets too stressful and they avoid and ignore everything and everyone they can. They often find themselves laying in their bed for hours watching Youtube or Tiktok and getting nothing done by the end of the day. Sometimes this shut actually ends up raising their anxiety because they miss due dates for schoolwork, blow off work, or have parents losing it on them because they haven’t done their chores around the house. Honestly, it’s not a great cycle. I know it doesn’t feel good when adults don’t understand and are good at pointing out what you’re not doing right.

I work to help teens and parents break this cycle of internalized pressure, shame, procrastination, and avoidance. I talk with my teen clients and help them develop problem solving skills to catch up on assignments, find balance in responsibilities and fun activities, deal with daily stressors of being a teen, and helping them develop their sense of identity.

In counseling my hope is to give teens a space to share things they may not feel comfortable sharing with other people. I want to help them feel they can be open with me without feeling judged or criticized so we can have open conversations about their experiences. We work together to help identify their needs and wants and develop the skills needed so they can appropriately communicate those needs and wants so they are effective. This helps them find their voice and thus use it at home, school, work, and with friends.

I work with teens who are struggling and want and need some support and assistance with how to:

  • Reduce social anxiety and generalized anxiety
  • Manage impulsive reactions and behaviors
  • Increase self-esteem and self-confidence
  • Lessen isolation and depression related symptoms and increase positive interactions with others
  • Develop healthy emotional coping skills
  • Set healthy boundaries within relationships with friends and family
  • Understand, accept, and embrace their sexual identity
  • Understand, accept, and embrace their gender
  • Cope with fear of failure
  • Reduce self-injury or other unhelpful repetitive behaviors
  • Better understand what alcohol and/or drugs is doing for them to help make informed decisions about when, where, how much or if they use / drink.
  • Reduce substance abuse concerns
  • Develop effective communication with parents to decrease conflict and negative consequences due to communication breakdowns.
  • Stop continual procrastination and increase time management skills to help reduce overall stress

Parents have great responsibility and it can be scary when we see our children struggle through something difficult. In fact this experience is down right emotionally painful.

I work with parents to rebuild the communication with their teens so trust can be rebuilt and enhanced. I guide parent on effective ways to teach their teens healthy problem-solving skills and helpful communication skills.

Having parents involved in their teens counseling is often very helpful. When there is collaboration then there can be new connection and growth for both parent and teen.

MY PROFESSIONAL JOURNEY AS A THERAPIST

I’ve often been told and ever since I can remember, I’ve been a good listener. For years, people have found me to be an easy person to open up and talk to. They tend to feel comfortable and safe around me.

I obtained my Bachelor’s of Arts in degree in Psychology from North Central College. During that time I worked at the Wellness Center as a peer counselor and helped international students and out of state students transition more easily to the college life. My goal was to help students find their place in a new environment and grow from their experience. I was also an Orientation Leader, which helped me find my voice and be an advocate for students and families that were starting something completely new.

I obtained my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling degree from Argosy University and while there completed an internship at a Private counseling practice working with teens and families providing individual, family, and group counseling.

Before joining Health and Healing Therapy, I’ve worked in a psychiatric hospital setting, and for the past several years I’ve been working as a therapist at another private counseling practice that offers mental health and substance abuse intensive outpatient therapy and outpatient counseling for teens, emerging adults, families, and adults.

In the therapy services I provide, I work from a model that focuses on how we think, feel, and behave. If you can change one of these things, then the others will start to change overtime. If we were to work together I would help you find a new outlook on things, reach your goals, and help you find the confidence you need to face the challenges in your life.
